Last week, my blog was based on the book Food or Foe which I am still reading and very much enjoying. This week the article I read was called Food and the Media. This topic talks about the relationship between the media world conveying the wrong body image for young males and females. As seen in movies and on TV, all the popular females are skinny and thin with gorgeous bodies and flawless faces. The men are muscular, beautiful eyes, and pretty faces. Most Americans know that actors gain and lose weight constantly to fit their roles for certain movies and TV shows and photo shoots. After stars turn into their role, whether it is losing weight or gaining, it shows up in the paper the next day. The magazines criticize what bad role models they are for adjusting their weight so much but then talk the next day about how amazing they look. The standards for average women and men of certain ages, weights, and heights does not even add up to a perfect "model" body. This is a certain topic that gets talked about on the daily and effects many teenagers who look up to a certain star or famous person and want to be just like them even though it is horrible for their body!Monday, January 11, 2010

I remember reading about anorexia for the first time when I was about your age. Before that, nobody talked about it and I can assure you that people weren't as uptight about their bodies.
ReplyDeleteWhy are Americans so much heavier than they were 40 years ago. Did you ever see fotage of Woodstock. All the men were lean like jaguars, and the women were slender. I guess high fructose corn syrup is one of the culprits.
Thanks for a thoughtful blog!
